Hot Tip - Planning a Presentation

Oral presentations give many of us sweaty palms and a sense of unease; yet they are a requirement of many college classes. Use these tips to help you deliver a calm, effective oral presentation.

  1. Be clear about the assignment and related requirements.
    • Is there a specified topic or topic list?
    • What is the required length of the presentation?
    • Are you expected to use audio-visuals?
    • Will you be able to use notes or other prompts?
  2. Know your topic. Be certain that you can define and pronounce words that you will use in your presentation.
  3. Focus on a manageable topic. It’s difficult to present well on a broad topic such as Global Warming. However, you may be more successful on a narrow topic such as The Effects of Global Warming on Heat Zones and Gardening.
  4. Rehearse – this means practicing the entire presentation aloud.
    • Reviewing your notes is a good start, but you will greatly increase your chances for success if you actually practice the entire presentation aloud.
    • Before the start of the presentation, breathe. A few deep breaths will help calm you.
  5. If you need to present statistics or numbers, make the presentation visual so that people can literally see what you mean. PowerPoint, a handout, or even the use of a flip chart or blackboard can help you communicate numbers visually.
  6. Keep your focus on the audience.
    • Consider how you can make the presentation interesting for them.
    • Think of your presentation as a story you are telling the audience. You’ll need an opening, the main points, and a closing or conclusion.
